ASIAN UNIVERSITY SHOPPING & ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICTS: Seoul's Sinchon

Sinchon rotary in front of station

The Sinchon station is located between two elite South Korean universities, Ewha Women's University, & the Protestant-founded Yonsei University. Nearby is another Christian university, the Jesuit-run Sogang University . Around the station is a warren of alleys where all types of businesses which cater to the students' needs prospered. For some reason, the university shopping & entertainment  areas (Sinchon, Hongdae & Daehangno) are livelier in Seoul than in Tokyo (Takadanobaba & Westside of Ikebukuro in Tokyo don't let their hair down as hard). Meanwhile, the other city with a prominent university district, Manila's Sampaloc university belt, has become a hovel despite some high rises along España St. while youth hangouts in the Quezon City area have gentrified. Let's hope for new stirrings in Sampaloc. Amazingly, some of the newer shops in the latter are owned by Korean migrants (eating kimchi in España is great). Hope they can duplicate Sinchon at the university belt.
Yonsei University

Below is a short walk from Yonsei University, passing through the Sinchon rotary in front of the station, then straight up ahead towards Ewha. It doesn't include the more famous portion, the so-called Walking Street, which is actually more of the same scene but includes the Hyundae Department Store branch, the U-Plex. The route would be too long for our purpose though, it is further down near the outlet to the highway that connects the area with downtown Seoul. We just like to present the atmospherics of the Sinchon area, the way a university shopping & entertainment area should be.
